New Albums: February 2017

It is 10:36pm and I'm having trouble keeping my eyes open because my son drains the life force from his mother and I. sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Do you see that up there? I'm not joking; I fell asleep typing and that shit came out. Alas, if only I'd had my finger on the Z key instead.

Here's the stuff that came out in February 2017 mang. I had more, but my phone deleted all my notes so I lost my list. This is why you should send me your music people! Just send a link to and I'll put it on the blog!

The Concerned Relatives (Visalia, CA)
Born out of church band jam sessions, Steven Potorke and Greg Amend (formerly of Visalia's Orcher) lay out a trio of soothing tunes based on the Bible's Book of Acts. The songs are satisfyingly crunchy and soothing to the soul, like a cool glass of water on a hot day. Ocher was one of my favorite bands back in the day, so it's great to get a little taste of that ol' sound back again. It's a pleasure and I hope to hear more soon.

MC Wicks (Fresno, CA)
The Buffet
The dirtiest rapper in the game returns with his angriest effort to date. In The Buffet, the follow-up to 2016's The Frog Brothers, Wicks exhibits a take no prisoners resentment against everyone and everything. And as usual, Wicks features some sick production, this time from Fresno producers Shon J, ML3, and Awbskure. Fave tracks: "Get to the $$" and "The Other Side".

Where Sea Meets Sky (Fresno, CA)
Earnest instrumental rock for when you need to rend your garments and yell towards the heavens. But like in a positive way, cause this music is fairly upbeat. So maybe just undo your zipper or something.

That's it for music! Before I got let me remind you kind reader that we'll be participating in Dead Eyes 90's Slaughter III! Members of Werebear, Macondo, Satellite Era, and The Eros will be banding together to cover Radiohead! Our cut of the door will go towards funding our annual Spanspek Music and Arts Festival, which provides money for local scholarships and art! So please go and bring all your friends!
Thanks and we'll see you later!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Mike Oz

Hey! We got another blog for you! This is unprecedented! It's from Fresno renaissance man Mike Oz!  A lot of your faithful readers know who this dude is, but for those who don't Mike Oz covers baseball at Yahoo Sports, hosts Ozmosis on New Rock 104.1 and organizes Fresno-area events such as Taco Truck Throwdown, FresYes Fest and Tacos, Brews & Jams. Before all that, he wrote about music and pop culture at The Fresno Bee for 10 years. Follow him on social media, @mikeoz.  See, he's legit.

But before we get to his picks please consider donating to Spanspek by going to the TULARE COUNTY ARTS CONSORTIUM WEBSITE and clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.  All donations go to our scholarship fund and help us keep doing our podcast, blog, and music festival! Any amount helps!

Oh and by the way, be sure to hit up Mike's Tacos, Brews, and Jams event tonight at the Tioga-Sequoia Brewery!
Thanks and lets see what Mike Oz likes!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year. You are all really cool people and without your support we couldn't do any of this!  So THANK YOU! And you know, if you want to kick a few scrills our way to h…
