Spanspek Spotlight 2016 - Sagey

Hello! What's the word folks? Everything going ok?  Did you ask your crush out? Did you win the Olympics?  Did you like Suicide Squad? That's good, that's allllll good. But enough of all that! The 11th edition of the Spanspek Music and Arts Festival is a mere month away and we got some profiles to run!

That's right folks, if you've been wanting to learn about the bands and artists featuring at Spanspek this year, all you have to do is check out this here blog for the next few weeks or so.  We'll be posting about EVERYONE. To start things off, lets get into the music of self proclaimed Fresno boy band SAGEY!

Here's what the Sticks & Stones Mothership site had to say about the trio back in May 2016:

"SAGEY delivers heavy beats that melt the stage & make the audience go berserk. They’re a force to be reckoned with.

Brandon [Spain] is the face of the band, the rapper who drops gold bars at breakneck speed & has the stage presence of a Tasmanian devil. He’s not afraid to occasionally hurl into the crowd & get physical with the sweaty, angry kids that enjoy smashing into each other for the art.

Joselito [Rey] is the DJ, conjuring crazy ass industrial beats that slap harder than a Jehovah’s Witness mother with a faithless child. Seth [Duran] is a young Zach Hill. Much like Death Grips, SAGEY just wouldn’t be the same without some bonkers live drum rides & fills.

The band is a staple of the Fresno music scene. They attend a lot of shows as openers, but end up filling out the joint with a shit ton of their own fans; making new ones along the way.

In general, SAGEY is wild.”

By the way, be sure to check out the rest of the videos on their YouTube page, in particular the insane and INCREDIBLY NSFW video for awesome single "Flaunt".

Looks folks, I've long since passed the time in which I could identify rap subgenres. So I have no idea what to call what Sagey does. But I know it hits hard, and it feels good. If the groups live videos are any indication, the music inspires insanity to rival the most wild of CYC crowds. You do not want to miss when this band hits the Spanspek stage.

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Mike Oz

Hey! We got another blog for you! This is unprecedented! It's from Fresno renaissance man Mike Oz!  A lot of your faithful readers know who this dude is, but for those who don't Mike Oz covers baseball at Yahoo Sports, hosts Ozmosis on New Rock 104.1 and organizes Fresno-area events such as Taco Truck Throwdown, FresYes Fest and Tacos, Brews & Jams. Before all that, he wrote about music and pop culture at The Fresno Bee for 10 years. Follow him on social media, @mikeoz.  See, he's legit.

But before we get to his picks please consider donating to Spanspek by going to the TULARE COUNTY ARTS CONSORTIUM WEBSITE and clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.  All donations go to our scholarship fund and help us keep doing our podcast, blog, and music festival! Any amount helps!

Oh and by the way, be sure to hit up Mike's Tacos, Brews, and Jams event tonight at the Tioga-Sequoia Brewery!
Thanks and lets see what Mike Oz likes!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year. You are all really cool people and without your support we couldn't do any of this!  So THANK YOU! And you know, if you want to kick a few scrills our way to h…
