Spanspek Spotlight 2016 - Call Me James

Good morning folks! I'm writing this at night, half falling asleep, so it feels weird to wish ya'll a good morning.  And yet here we are! So lets get to it! Next up for our series of profiles is Visalia alt-pop band CALL ME JAMES!
Here's what Visalia Times-Delta writer Zachary Newcott had to say about the band back in February:

Shakespeare once wrote that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

But he left out that it would also rock out just as hard.

Brendon Reese of the indie-rock band Call Me James does just that, and he continues to prove it with [every] performance.

Reese is most recognized as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the local indie-alternative rock group Sometime Yesterday, which continues to tour and record new music...

While Sometime Yesterday has been busy with the gigs that followed the release of their album “Audiophile” in May 2015, Reese has branched out by writing, recording, and performing his own songs under the alias of Call Me James.

The particular sound that Reese has since developed is spawned from multiple influences like the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, and modern alternative rock and folk artists such as City and Colour and Young the Giant.

That's right folks, you heard it here first: there ain't even a guy named James in the band!!!  That doesn't matter a lick though, cause these dudes got it going on.  And it's in large part to the memorable songwriting and unique tenor of singer Brendon Reese.  The hooks are abundant but it's Reese's voice that sets Call Me James apart from other young bands.  The throaty incantations add layers of maturity and world weariness to the celebratory guitar epicness the band specializes in. Every article I've read about this band always includes the phrase "up and comers", and folks; it's totally true. These dudes is going places!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year. You are all really cool people and without your support we couldn't do any of this!  So THANK YOU! And you know, if you want to kick a few scrills our way to h…
