New Albums - February 2016

Damn, we were doing pretty good there for a while before I took that unexpected three week break! Nimodo gueys, here's a grip load of new local music to win back your hearts! DO IT!

The Babbling Crooks (Fresno, CA)
Crooked Teeth and Broken Smiles
Inspired guitar work from Tyrannosaurus Zebra's Ralee Drennon makes the debut from the Babbling Crooks an intriguing curiosity. Opening track "5000 Forgotten Paths" in particular is a fun listen.

Between the Cities Are Stars (Fresno, CA)
Good ass shoegaze for peeps who like their eardrums obliterated, featuring drummer and Fresno expatriate Eli Reyes!

The Blue (Fresno, CA)
Under the Weather (Available at shows)
The first album in 35 years from the legendary Fresno band. A blast from the past in the best way possible.

Born Betty (Fresno, CA)
s/t (Available at shows)
Alt rock quartet with a dose of pop punk.

Cease (Fresno, CA)
Uncompromising hardcore from the hell fires of the Central Valley. You're mom will love it!

Chyna (Fresno, CA)
Math rock that goes down smooth. Like a refreshing Squirt brand beverage.

Cloudship (Fresno, CA)
Argo (available on iTunes)
The 3rd album in so many years from the hardest working indie/roots rock duo in the business!

Eric & Suzy Thompson (Fresno, CA)
Refreshing family style bluegrass as a cool glass of lemonade on a hot summer day.

Green Giant (Fresno, CA)
1-30-2016 Beat Test
DJ Green Giant be mashing up mad beats with vocal tracks from Kanye West to the Notorious B.I.G. A fun listen.
\Jalinche (Fresno, CA)
no sleep
The hardest working campesino in show business cranks out the second in what looks to be an ongoing series of beat tapes. With each release the DJ hones his craft, creating increasingly delectable taco loops por la panza.

Judah (Fresno, CA)
New kids on the block get loud and apparently recover from bong addiction?

ML3 (Fresno, CA)
Rexford (3AM Records)
Part of the Mercy Chords hip hop crew, ML3 takes old school cool to another level.

Shrug (Fresno, CA)
Dirty dirty dirty hardcore perfect for spitting in peoples faces and jumping into a raging mosh pit.

Tyrannosaurus Zebra (Fresno, CA)
TZ Lite Vol 1.: Milo Goes to Otis
I'd venture to say that this is only for the TZ faithful, but really these new arrangements of old Tyrannosaurus Zebra songs are pretty charming in their own dusty way.

Worms (Visalia, CA)
Beats Vol. III
Longtime politically inclined rapper Worms takes a break from the rhyme game to lay down a couple of low down beat tapes for the masses.

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Mike Oz

Hey! We got another blog for you! This is unprecedented! It's from Fresno renaissance man Mike Oz!  A lot of your faithful readers know who this dude is, but for those who don't Mike Oz covers baseball at Yahoo Sports, hosts Ozmosis on New Rock 104.1 and organizes Fresno-area events such as Taco Truck Throwdown, FresYes Fest and Tacos, Brews & Jams. Before all that, he wrote about music and pop culture at The Fresno Bee for 10 years. Follow him on social media, @mikeoz.  See, he's legit.

But before we get to his picks please consider donating to Spanspek by going to the TULARE COUNTY ARTS CONSORTIUM WEBSITE and clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.  All donations go to our scholarship fund and help us keep doing our podcast, blog, and music festival! Any amount helps!

Oh and by the way, be sure to hit up Mike's Tacos, Brews, and Jams event tonight at the Tioga-Sequoia Brewery!
Thanks and lets see what Mike Oz likes!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year. You are all really cool people and without your support we couldn't do any of this!  So THANK YOU! And you know, if you want to kick a few scrills our way to h…
