Spanspek Spotlight: Jukebawks, Green Giant, & Nesto

Good morning folks! As I type this it's late and I'm craving another bowl of Reese's Peanut Butter Crunch cereal.  That shit is good!

Anywho, this here Spotlight blog is devoted to the wonderful DJ's performing at this years fest! To start things off lets give a listen to Fresno DJ and producer JUKEBAWKS
Jukebawks is one of the preeminent DJ/producers working in the Valley today.  If there's a rapper with the "up and coming" label attached to them, it's likely that Jukebawks is behind the scenes, crafting that rappers beats. See for example his soulful production on the debut single from rap supergroup the Grizzly City Boys (featuring Fashawn, Omar Aura, Otis Reed, & Halo).

And Jukebawks ain't no slouch when it comes to releasing his own material.  2015 has seen the release of two Jukebawks albums (instrumental and otherwise), full of futuristic R&B, 90's covers, and remixes of locally created songs (see remix of Sahab's "No?" below).
Jukebawks is an incredible talent and we're proud to have him perform at this years festival! For more info on Jukebawks, visit his Soundcloud, Twitter, and Instagram.

Next up is up and coming Fresno DJ GREEN GIANT!
Green Giant is quickly becoming one of the go to DJ's on the Fresno scene.  His cruise night ready tunage has resulted in Green Giant consistently heading up shows at Veni Vidi Vici and other prominent ArtHop venues, not to mention almost every festival this summer.  Plus, he's a suuuuper nice guy, always willing to help out a fellow musician in need.
Green Giant is guaranteed to rock the turntables! Don't sleep on this dude!  For more information visit his Soundcloud and Instagram.

Last but not least, give it up for Reedley phenom and Spanspek alumni NESTO!
Nesto has performed many times before at Spanspek as the drummer for prog/instrumental group Tokyo Death March.  This'll be his first time going solo at the festival and we're pretty excited.  Nesto's homebrewed mix of oldies, 90's/00's raps, and the kitchen sink is the perfect cure to what ails you, assuming what ails you is curable via dancing your ass off.

We're happy to welcome Nesto back into the Spanspek fold.  For more info, visit Nesto's Soundcloud!

And that's it for the DJ's!  They'll be performing within the Spanspek Bar area, so be sure to bring your ID's!  Thanks and we'll be back with spotlight blogs on the rest of the bands performing at Spanspek!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Mike Oz

Hey! We got another blog for you! This is unprecedented! It's from Fresno renaissance man Mike Oz!  A lot of your faithful readers know who this dude is, but for those who don't Mike Oz covers baseball at Yahoo Sports, hosts Ozmosis on New Rock 104.1 and organizes Fresno-area events such as Taco Truck Throwdown, FresYes Fest and Tacos, Brews & Jams. Before all that, he wrote about music and pop culture at The Fresno Bee for 10 years. Follow him on social media, @mikeoz.  See, he's legit.

But before we get to his picks please consider donating to Spanspek by going to the TULARE COUNTY ARTS CONSORTIUM WEBSITE and clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.  All donations go to our scholarship fund and help us keep doing our podcast, blog, and music festival! Any amount helps!

Oh and by the way, be sure to hit up Mike's Tacos, Brews, and Jams event tonight at the Tioga-Sequoia Brewery!
Thanks and lets see what Mike Oz likes!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year. You are all really cool people and without your support we couldn't do any of this!  So THANK YOU! And you know, if you want to kick a few scrills our way to h…
