Spanspek 2015 - The Artists

Que tal folks?!  It's time for the annual GIGANTIC ARTISTS POST!  Settle in and get ready to read up on all the artists participating at this years festival!

Mychal Alva (Visalia, CA)
Mychal Alva is a mixed media artist and DJ (under the moniker Low Key) active in the Central Valley and Bay Area.

Cecilia Carrillo (Los Angeles/Orosi, CA)
Cecilia Carrillo is a longtime Spanspek volunteer who creates interactive art areas for children and adults alike.  When not helping with Spanspek Carrillo works as an instructor for The Growing Place in Los Angeles.

Robert Chavez (Fresno, CA)
A self described "nerdy retro ass 80's junkie", Robert Chavez draws pop culture fantasies, using everything from Star Wars to WWF wrestlers as inspiration.

Carlos A. Cisneros (Fresno, CA)
Carlos A. Cisneros is a freelance artist raised in the Central Valley of California. Main works include two dimensional mixed media art.

College of the Sequoias Printworks (Visalia, CA)
COS Printwoks is a club of artists and printmakers from the College of The Sequoias in Visalia, CA. The group is made up of committed individuals who work year-round to harbor the talent of COS students on a day to day basis. Fundraising and networking are key elements in the program.  The group also brings visiting artists throughout the year and also hosts workshops during the summer. COS PrintWorks is committed to living and breathing art. The group continuously strives to respect and be consciously aware of art in every aspect of a persons life - because without art, there is nothing.

Teresa Flores (Los Angeles/Fresno, CA)
Teresa Flores utilizes drawing, painting, experimental video and public interventions to examine class and regional cultural variations within California. She has served as a board member for Arte Américas and Fresno Filmworks and taught art at California Arts Academy and Fresno Unified School District. Her work has been exhibited throughout Fresno and Los Angeles, most notably in an emerging artists exhibit juried by Los Angeles Times art critic David Pagel. Flores holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Graduate Public Practice Program at Otis College of Art and Design.

Christina Galang (Orosi, CA)
Christina Galang is an Orosi native who creates whimsical jewelry and gothic art.  In her spare time Galang also performs with Mariachi Sol de Oro.

Jose Guadalupe Garcia (Madera, CA)
Jose Guadalupe Garcia has won multiple fair awards for his life size sculptures of mythical creatures.  Garcia uses common welding techniques to fashion entities that amaze and inspire.

David Herrera (Visalia, CA)
David Herrera is an artist active in Visalia's "Culture Night" scene.  Herrera also works as an instructor with Visalia's Pro-Youth/HEART after-school programs.

Abigail Janzen (Fresno, CA) - Spanspek 2015 Commission Artist
Abigail Janzen is an artist & Dulce Upfront co-founder specializing in handmade gifts and decor for all occasions.  Janzen's new work, commissioned by the Spanspek Music and Arts Festival, will be shown at this years event.  

Carlos Lujan (Fresno, CA)
Carlos Lujan is a letterer, designer, and illustrator specializing in branding, art direction, and typography.  Lujan has produced a special commemorative poster to celebrate Spanspek's 10th year.

Laura May (Fresno, CA)
Laura May is a tattoo artist who offers custom tattoos created with all vegan tattoo products.  She also creates custom artwork in other mediums and participates in Arthop happenings when time permits.

Steven Nunez Camacho (Fresno, CA)
Steve Nunez Camacho is an artist from that specializes in mixed-media using elements such as spray paint, stencils, posters and freehand drawings.  His work can currently be seen at Arte Americas in Fresno.

Orosi High School Art Department (Orosi, CA)
Art instructors Elise & Jason Whited will be showcasing original art works from dozens of Orosi High School students.

Robert Pero (Oakland/Fresno, CA)
Robert Pero is a freelance photographer based out of Oakland, CA.

Carmen Solis (Fresno, CA)
From Carmen Solis' website: "'Vissi d' Arte'. The name derives from Puccini's opera, Tosca. Vissi d' Arte signifies I lived for my art. I have adopted this as my mantra; a way to signify a life's dedication to creating art.

Sloppy Stitches by Tron (Fresno, CA)
Sloppy Stiches makes crochet goods that make your yarn dreams come true! The fun treats are designed and handcrafted by a yarn loving lady with the intention to brighten your day.

Tudor Stanley (Fresno, CA)
Tudor Stanley was born in Mexico City, raised in Fresno, and currently resides in San Francisco.  He studied photography at Fresno City College, Academy of Art and San Francisco City College.  Besides photography Stanley sometimes make videos.

Andrea Torres (Fresno, CA)
Andrea Torres is a self described "color enthusiast" residing in Fresno, CA.


Urbanists Collective (Visalia, CA)
The Urbanists Collective is a group of artists whose main focus is to promote the education and positive expansion of urban art within the community. The group has rapidly grown to include talents such as spray-can artists, photographers, tattoo artists, writers, poets/vocalists, DJ's, screen printers and more.

Jermz Woodard (Visalia, CA)
Jermz Woodard is a multi-media artist from the central valley of California. Though interested in learning new techniques, Woodard tends to focus on painting, sculpture, and illustrations. He is the co-founder of Minds Eye Studios and recently joined The Akashic House Game Studio as a concept and environment artist.  Woodard has participated in more Spanspeks than any other artist in the Valley.

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year.
