2013 Spanspek Artists!

What's the haps everyone?  How goes it?!  I'm at home at the moment, taking a day off from the factory to get ready for tomorrow's (holy crap!) festival!  It's pretty cool.  I'm watching my dogs fight with each other.  One of them just walked off all cool after pinning the other down, only to be jumped from behind by the same dog.  That ish is gangsta!

So we've written about all the bands, but there's also a bunch of artists that will be exhibiting their stuff!  Lets meet them all, so you can then meet them in person tomorrow, then maybe run into them sometime in the post-apocalyptic future where you'll trade shoelaces for rubber bands.

Alright, so lets get this rolling!  Here are this years crazy cool artists!

Teresa Flores, Fresno/Los Angeles CA

I am a graduate of the Otis College of Art and Design Public Practice program. My work focuses on class and culture issues and uses the San Joaquin Valley, Fresno and LA as central reference points when addressing these topics. Mediums for my work range from traditional drawing and painting, to video and sound installation.

Teresa will be bringing her "Experimental Quesadilla Lab" and it's pretty much exactly what you're hoping it is:

Sergio Huerta, Orosi/Fresno CA

I like for my paintings to have a distinct personality... an essence of their own.  Each is a visual representation of a theme, laid bare on canvas.  The theme is always a feeling.  To give them character, varied elements are layered and blended into the theme.  The completed piece is honest, personal and invites the viewer to 'look again'... and what better subject to look at than the human body, the most fascinating masterpiece in existence.  Through our bodies we experience sensations, respond to stimuli and react to our desires... an infinite source of inspiration.

Eric Rodgriguez, Visalia CA

My art is about making things that don't or couldn't exist seem strangely familiar - creating a place with creatures and stories that don't look or feel of this world, but seem to fit right in.
Jared Jurcak, Fresno CA

A 2006 graduate of the Academy of Art University San Francisco, Jurcak has a foundation in photo and vector illustration, providing experience in still-life photography and a unique eye for portraiture and design.

Jenai Kaeo, Los Angeles CA

Pete Lugo, Fresno CA

Jorge Vargas, Orosi CA

Christina Galang, Orosi CA

Orosi High School Art Department/
Featuring works by Orosi High School students and
Instructors Elise Stringham and Jason Whited

Cecilia Carrillo, Orosi/Los Angeles CA
Interactive Art Lab

Featuring the photography of El Monte Middle School students

Fotokids was founded in Guatemala in 1991 by ex - Reuters photojournalist Nancy McGirr, and was originally called Out of the Dump.  The project began with a group of six children aged 5 - 12, who lived and worked in Guatemala City's vast garbage dump.  Over the years, the project grew to include hundreds of children from other economically poor areas of the capital.  Since 1996, Fotokids has expanded to include communities outside Guatemala City.

The program being conducted in Orosi is a first of its kind for Fotokids.  We're proud to host them at this years festival.

And that's it!  We'll also be showing off our Spanspek Commission Gallery, so be ready for arts all up in your faces!  SEE YOU TOMORROW!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Mike Oz

Hey! We got another blog for you! This is unprecedented! It's from Fresno renaissance man Mike Oz!  A lot of your faithful readers know who this dude is, but for those who don't Mike Oz covers baseball at Yahoo Sports, hosts Ozmosis on New Rock 104.1 and organizes Fresno-area events such as Taco Truck Throwdown, FresYes Fest and Tacos, Brews & Jams. Before all that, he wrote about music and pop culture at The Fresno Bee for 10 years. Follow him on social media, @mikeoz.  See, he's legit.

But before we get to his picks please consider donating to Spanspek by going to the TULARE COUNTY ARTS CONSORTIUM WEBSITE and clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.  All donations go to our scholarship fund and help us keep doing our podcast, blog, and music festival! Any amount helps!

Oh and by the way, be sure to hit up Mike's Tacos, Brews, and Jams event tonight at the Tioga-Sequoia Brewery!
Thanks and lets see what Mike Oz likes!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year. You are all really cool people and without your support we couldn't do any of this!  So THANK YOU! And you know, if you want to kick a few scrills our way to h…
