Locals Only: New Singles From Sahab, Hell08's

Sup.

It's been a long time folks!  And I'm finding it very hard to not quote the rest of that Aaliyah song.  So I'll just go on to say that I shouldn't have left you without a dope beat to step to.  Bah!  I couldn't have stopped that even if I tried!  R.I.P. girl.

So since my little sabbatical there've been a few notable releases.  So lets get to it!

First up, there's "Beautiful", the new single from Fresno studio scientist Sahab!
Like a more daring version of The Postal Service, "Beautiful" shows Sahab at his most evocative, painting vivid landscapes using almost every sound known to man.  Layers upon layers of electronic pulses, backwards guitars, and elegant piano form an exquisite palette that requires multiple listens to fully appreciate.  Through it all Sahab's soulful delivery bursts with passion, intoning the listener to stay true oneself, in spite of what others may want or say.

Sahab's full length album 11:59 is due out later this year.  To download "Beautiful" visit iTunes.  For more information on Sahab, please go to the following:

Next is the satanic ramblings of Fresno doom rap duo Hell08s!
Like a demon simultaneously downing sizzurp and inhaling helium, Hell08's Cloaked 2 Tha Brain EP is freaking ridonkulous.  Featuring razor sharp rhymes by former Beandip frontman Bones Malone and cataclysmic beats from producer Sea Shock, Hell08s form a lethal combination of apocalyptic proportions.  The title track, with its screaming sirens and blaring low brass, is a straight banger.  The song finds Malone "bragging about [his] pentagram" while he walks the burnt streets of Armageddon. Its what Dr. Dre might have sounded like had he been possessed by the devil.

It should be noted that both groups will be playing the gigantic Catacomb Party music festival, to be held July 20th over at Fresno's Downtown Fulton Mall!  You can get all the deets at www.catacombparty.com.

That's it for today.  We'll see you soon with some more reviews, and some very cool new content for y'all!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Mike Oz

Hey! We got another blog for you! This is unprecedented! It's from Fresno renaissance man Mike Oz!  A lot of your faithful readers know who this dude is, but for those who don't Mike Oz covers baseball at Yahoo Sports, hosts Ozmosis on New Rock 104.1 and organizes Fresno-area events such as Taco Truck Throwdown, FresYes Fest and Tacos, Brews & Jams. Before all that, he wrote about music and pop culture at The Fresno Bee for 10 years. Follow him on social media, @mikeoz.  See, he's legit.

But before we get to his picks please consider donating to Spanspek by going to the TULARE COUNTY ARTS CONSORTIUM WEBSITE and clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.  All donations go to our scholarship fund and help us keep doing our podcast, blog, and music festival! Any amount helps!

Oh and by the way, be sure to hit up Mike's Tacos, Brews, and Jams event tonight at the Tioga-Sequoia Brewery!
Thanks and lets see what Mike Oz likes!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year. You are all really cool people and without your support we couldn't do any of this!  So THANK YOU! And you know, if you want to kick a few scrills our way to h…
