Hello people of the internet!  I hope this morning finds you doing well.  We're less than a month away from Spanspek and I can already feel myself getting super anxious and excited!  This year is going to be packed with awesomeness and we hear at Spanspek can't wait for all of you to experience it!

With that said, let me introduce you to a first of its kind for Spanspek.  Never in our 7 years have we ever invited a non-human entity to perform.  Call it a bias towards living and breathing beings.  However, in an effort to form better relations with our soon to be computer overlords, we've invited an actual robot to perform.  So without further adieu let me introduce you to Fresno, CA cybernetic beat machine Collecto!

Here's what Collecto's programmers have to say about their creation, as listed Facebook:

"Collecto is a Robot who has but two programs loaded into his mainframe; one is to deliver a creative and unique sound to the people of Planet Earth, the other to make them get down.  No one knows when or where this robot arrived but the sound he has given to the people is that of High Energy, Funky Breaks, Grinding Synths, and a perfect blend of the old school with the new as he takes the Electronic genre into the future.  Gaining momentum and popularity very quickly Collecto always delivers a solid show and never fails to entertain the people within earshot.  He has now focused his eyes in the live arena and has built and designed his live set from the ground up purely for its listeners.  Unlike most electronic acts, Collecto performs all of his material LIVE and with major variation.  One can not help but to be captivated by the visuals, style, and execution of this mysterious robot."

My apologies to all the flesh and blood groups playing Spanspek this year when I say that this is one of the sets I'm most looking forward too.  I've known many automatons in my day, but never one that could be so downright dirty!  Collecto creates a kinetic fusion of grimey synth lines and break neck beats, all loaded within a vicious mainframe primed to pack a dance floor.  This is what the Robot Uprising would have sounded like had Skynet taken some E right after becoming self aware.

Folks, prepare yourselves because you're about to witness the actions of one badass microchip.

Videos of Collecto are hard to come by.  However, I did manage to find a performance from late 2011.  Enjoy!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Mike Oz

Hey! We got another blog for you! This is unprecedented! It's from Fresno renaissance man Mike Oz!  A lot of your faithful readers know who this dude is, but for those who don't Mike Oz covers baseball at Yahoo Sports, hosts Ozmosis on New Rock 104.1 and organizes Fresno-area events such as Taco Truck Throwdown, FresYes Fest and Tacos, Brews & Jams. Before all that, he wrote about music and pop culture at The Fresno Bee for 10 years. Follow him on social media, @mikeoz.  See, he's legit.

But before we get to his picks please consider donating to Spanspek by going to the TULARE COUNTY ARTS CONSORTIUM WEBSITE and clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.  All donations go to our scholarship fund and help us keep doing our podcast, blog, and music festival! Any amount helps!

Oh and by the way, be sure to hit up Mike's Tacos, Brews, and Jams event tonight at the Tioga-Sequoia Brewery!
Thanks and lets see what Mike Oz likes!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year. You are all really cool people and without your support we couldn't do any of this!  So THANK YOU! And you know, if you want to kick a few scrills our way to h…
