New Albums - June 2016

Good morning folks! I got two for all y'all today: THANK YOU!

This years Spanspek Fest was amazing! The Memorial Hall was full of good vibes, great food, chingon art, and fantastic performances. It was one of the best times we've had in good ol' Orosi, and for that we thank each and everyone of you that made that possible.

So yeah homies, lets get back to doing what we do best (after the festival ofcourse): ramblings about local music! We got a lot of catching up to do so here goes nothing!

Amoret (Fresno, CA)
Amoret leaves the bright lights of the club and ventures into the dark 4am streets on their somber third EP.

Kam Cooks (Fresno, CA)
The lastest in a long line of talented rappers emerging from the Grizzly City scene.  Cooks will be performing with his brother and fellow rapper Zee Will at the upcoming Tastemakers Festival October 15, 2016 in Visalia.

Matthew Embry (Fresno, CA)
A delightful live set of jukebox favorites from the eclectic and talented Fresno mainstay.

Fiend (Fresno, CA)
Suffering Mind (Lublin, Poland)
Split 7"
Grindcore that goes down smooth because one song is literally eight fucking seconds long. But on the real, I'm in love with this band cause it's like listening to drumline routines on meth. And sometimes, you just need that shit in your life, know what I'm saying?

Edward Hernandez (Visalia, CA)
Ukulele phenom Edward Hernandez shows off his chops on an album of rock, pop, and R & B standards.

Dr. Ink (Fresno, CA)
Some mathematical new new from a veteran of the Fresno rap scene.

Mary-Denise (Visalia, CA)
In which a young trio begins to make a name for itself with a bright and breezy two song EP.

The Millennials (Fresno, CA)
Some crunchy ass blues punk for those who wish B.B. King had listened to some Ramones or Black Flag everyone once in a while.

Neon the Unknown (Fresno, CA)
Playful synth minimalism for the weird Stranger Things kid in all of us.

Rudy Parris (Visalia, CA)
Makin' My Way (Warrior Records)
The Voice contestant and self styled Buck Owens disciple Rudy Parris takes no prisoners on his first album with Warrior Records. Come for the country stylings, stay for the fiery guitar solos.

Thanks again for reading and we'll be back later with another catch up posts, and who knows what else!

Reviews, probably just more reviews.  But you never know!

Definitely reviews though.

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Mike Oz

Hey! We got another blog for you! This is unprecedented! It's from Fresno renaissance man Mike Oz!  A lot of your faithful readers know who this dude is, but for those who don't Mike Oz covers baseball at Yahoo Sports, hosts Ozmosis on New Rock 104.1 and organizes Fresno-area events such as Taco Truck Throwdown, FresYes Fest and Tacos, Brews & Jams. Before all that, he wrote about music and pop culture at The Fresno Bee for 10 years. Follow him on social media, @mikeoz.  See, he's legit.

But before we get to his picks please consider donating to Spanspek by going to the TULARE COUNTY ARTS CONSORTIUM WEBSITE and clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.  All donations go to our scholarship fund and help us keep doing our podcast, blog, and music festival! Any amount helps!

Oh and by the way, be sure to hit up Mike's Tacos, Brews, and Jams event tonight at the Tioga-Sequoia Brewery!
Thanks and lets see what Mike Oz likes!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year. You are all really cool people and without your support we couldn't do any of this!  So THANK YOU! And you know, if you want to kick a few scrills our way to h…
