Spanspek Spotlight 2016 - Sahab, K. Pizzle, Jalinche

What's up gente!? We just got back from appearing on Radio Bilingue's Todo a Pulmon! We played with Mariachi Sol de Oro! Maracas and guiro and shit. It was cool.  So we're like mariachi now, no big deal.

And with that, lets talk about some DJ's son! We got three dudes that know how to rock the ones and twos! First up, Fresno R&B experimentalist, SAHAB!
Known primarily for his genre defying indie R&B, Sahab has lately been dabbling in pure DJ synth manipulation.  He's also for the most part forgone performing live, preferring instead to broadcast sets via Facebook Live from the comfort of his mysterious lair. Though unusual, the move has given Sahab the freedom to experiment and improvise in an environment free from the constraints of the stage.  The results are fascinating, revealing a unique figure in the Central Valley scene. Sahab's performance at Spanspek will be one of the few occasions you can see the dude do his thing live.  Rest assured that it will be like nothing you've ever heard before.

You can find more info on Sahab on his treasure trove of a website.

Longtime Valley hip hop fiends are likely to know the musical stylings of DJ/producer K. PIZZLE. The talented producer quietly works in the background providing beats for a who's who of Fresno rappers, including Otis Reed, MC Wicks, and Spanspek favorite General Populus, among many others. The guys in the No all know what the general public does not; that K. Pizzle is your go to guy for playful, steady rockin' beats. Expect more of the same at KP's Spanspek DJ set, which you should make sure not to miss cause this guy doesn't perform live too often either!

For more info on K. Pizzle, visit his Soundcloud, Bandcamp, and Facebook pages.

And last but not least, a Cutler-Orosi legend, the hardest working campesino in show businesses, el pinche JALINCHE. Real name Edward Moreno, he was given his nickname because the guy would constantly be working ("jale" meaning job in Spanish). Or at least that's what I was told, who knows really. But damn it the name feels right, especially given the year Moreno has had. In the span of five months, Jalinche has released four beat tapes.  Dubbed Taco Loops, the tapes mix hip hop, 90's norteno, jazz samples, and general weirdness, into one tasty meal. We're glad to welcome Jalinche back to the place he use to call home.

For more on Jalinche, visit his Bandcamp, Soundcloud, or Facebook page.

It's from Fresno renaissance man Mike Oz!  A lot of your faithful readers know who this dude is, but for those who don't Mike Oz covers baseball at Yahoo Sports, hosts Ozmosis on New Rock 104.1 and organizes Fresno-area events such as Taco Truck Throwdown, FresYes Fest and Tacos, Brews & Jams. Before all that, he wrote about music and pop culture at The Fresno Bee for 10 years. Follow him on social media, @mikeoz.  See, he's legit.

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year. You are all really cool people and without your support we couldn't do any of this!  So THANK YOU! And you know, if you want to kick a few scrills our way to h…
