Sci-Fi Caper

Good morning everyone!  I hope this blog finds you all doing well.  At this very moment it is 4pm on a Friday and I am stuck at work, eagerly awaiting the end of the work day so I can clock out and go get some ice cream or something.  So while I wait, I says to myself, I says, "You should write one of those blog posts about the bands that are playing Spanspek."  And then I quickly minimize the screen so that my co-workers don't catch on to what I'm doing.  That ain't no TPS Report, they'd say, as they drag my soon to be tortured self to the dungeon, deep beneath the bowels of the Earth.  Did I mention that I work at Medievel Times?

So here we are!  And here is Fresno CA Friendcore band Sci-Fi Caper!

Here's a brief but incredibly accurate description of the group, as provided by Amber Fargano (of Passion Bucket/Fatty Cakes/Strawberry Jam fame):

"An important sound in Fresno. This group is bringing to the valley exactly what it needs - California beach-rock jams that will make you want to hold whoever's hand is closest and dance real cute."

I couldn't have said it better myself.  But I'm going to try to anyway!

When we first started looking for bands to book for 2012, one of our first picks was Sci-Fi Caper.  I mean, the fizzy hooks, the dance pop rhythms, the lovelorn lyrics; what's not to like?!  Plus the whole group is super cute.  I haven't seen a band this cute since baby Paul McCartney took up a rattler shaped like a guitar.  The music literally inspires smiles people!  It's the antidote to "serious rock", not to say that they don't take what they do seriously.  The work they put into their craft is easily evident.  It's the very reason their songs go down so smooth.  Take note budding songwriters of the future: it takes a lot of hard work to make a song sound easy.  Or maybe not, who knows with these guys.  I wouldn't be surprised if they're waking up, all in the same bed ofcourse (because I always imagine that band members live together Walton's style), with these melodies coming out the wazoo.  I could believe it because I LOVE THEM THAT MUCH!
This will be their first time playing Spanspek so please be sure to show them some love!  For more information on the Sci-Fi Caper, please visit one of the many links below!!/scificaper

And watch this video why don't you!

And if you've got some time, they'll be playing tonight at the CAFE Infoshop, in Downtown
Fresno.  Show starts around 6:30pm!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Mike Oz

Hey! We got another blog for you! This is unprecedented! It's from Fresno renaissance man Mike Oz!  A lot of your faithful readers know who this dude is, but for those who don't Mike Oz covers baseball at Yahoo Sports, hosts Ozmosis on New Rock 104.1 and organizes Fresno-area events such as Taco Truck Throwdown, FresYes Fest and Tacos, Brews & Jams. Before all that, he wrote about music and pop culture at The Fresno Bee for 10 years. Follow him on social media, @mikeoz.  See, he's legit.

But before we get to his picks please consider donating to Spanspek by going to the TULARE COUNTY ARTS CONSORTIUM WEBSITE and clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.  All donations go to our scholarship fund and help us keep doing our podcast, blog, and music festival! Any amount helps!

Oh and by the way, be sure to hit up Mike's Tacos, Brews, and Jams event tonight at the Tioga-Sequoia Brewery!
Thanks and lets see what Mike Oz likes!

Spanspek's Favorite Music of 2016 - Local Albums

What's up! This is it folks, we made it to the end of another year! And what a doozy it was. We saw a few local venues call it quits and some come under intense scrutiny by parties both well intentioned and not. Yet we also got to see a bunch of young bands flourish and a few old timers up and tour the country. It seems like the local scene is at a point of transition. And that's kinda of scary. But it can be exciting too. I'm hoping for more of the latter in 2017.

Ok, so on this last post we're gonna share our favorite local albums of 2016.  It's my favorite blog to write (though it takes for damn ever to do) and I'm looking forward to hear what y'all think!  But before we get to that Spanspek Co-Founder Israel Flores and myself would like to thank everyone  that has supported Spanspek this year. You are all really cool people and without your support we couldn't do any of this!  So THANK YOU! And you know, if you want to kick a few scrills our way to h…
